This archive is one of the nicest things i have found on the net. Really lifts the spirits listening to Thameside again after so many years - i have kept an eye out for something like this and was really pleased when the first jingles and snippets started to appear a couple of years back. It was and still is my favourite radio station and set of presenters - the music really stands up as a superb mix of classic and eclectic sounds of the decade leading up to shows. To me this is the most interesting period musically anyway!. Not to say theres nothing good anymore, but the strength in depth of music played by Thameside DJs takes some beating - never mind the humour, humility and sense of service shown by all involved. It could easily have been a vehicle for ego-trippers or fame-seekers - but so clearly wasnt. I really hope all are well and suitably proud of what they did.
I was a regular listener from about 1978 to 1981 when living in Raynes Park SW20, but was too shy to ever get involved in the parties or meet ups (i was only 14-17 at the time!). I made just one C90 tape of the show - during 1980 i think - which i took to uni and played to friends etc - whenever the topic of radio stations came up i was never in any doubt what my favourite had been. Anyway, somehow I still have the tape but its been years since i have played it - cassette decks are getting thin on the ground these days and the last one i owned went to cassette deck heaven about 15 years ago. I have recently been given a nice deck that would otherwise have gone on a tip, so will try to convert to MP3 as i have done this with vinyl in the past. Infact i still play a lot of vinyl..but thats a different subject. So far I have been working through the podcasts and although i recognise many of the jingles i dont think i have quite found the particular show(s) yet that i have some segments of - so fingers crossed there may be something to add. One of the distinctive tracks on a Birdman Show is "Poisoing pigeons in the park" by Tom Lehrer (once heard not forgotten!).
Keep up the great work building these archives. These guys (and girls) deserve all the credit they can get for what they did.
